The Las Vegas driver now ranks seventh in the NHRA Top Fuel standings. Fuller qualified his Rob Flynn-tuned Caterpillar dragster seventh with a time of 4.608 seconds on Friday evening. He was matched-up against Troy Buff for the second time in his career. Fuller, a six-time NHRA Top Fuel winner, used a huge starting line advantage to race the Caterpillar rail to the early lead, but the yellow-and-black car lost traction and slowed to a run of 5.279 seconds at 208.97 mph. Buff sped to a run of 4.716 at 314.53 to earn the trip to the quarterfinals. Fuller is now 0-2 in his career against Buff. It is the first time that Fuller has suffered consecutive opening round losses since the St. Louis and Denver races in June/July 2006. “This is a huge letdown for our team, fans and sponsors,” Fuller said. “We’re just in a slump. We haven’t performed well and we’ve got to right the ship. We need to make some laps on this car. We haven’t tested much this season and we’re going to test on Monday here at (Las) Vegas. We’ll get our confidence back. The way this Countdown (to the Championship) sets up, it plays in to our favor. We have to peak at the right time. We’re confident that we’ll be in the winner’s circle soon.” The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 28th annual Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals, April 24-27, at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga. Fuller earned the pole at the Atlanta race last spring.
