(March 16, 2008) – Rod Fuller raced his David Powers-owned Caterpillar dragster to a quarterfinal finish Sunday afternoon during the 39th annual ACDelco Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway. Fuller squared off against European champion Urs Erbacher in the opening round. It was the first time the two have met during eliminations. Fuller used a solid .066 of-a-second reaction time to drive his Caterpillar-backed rail to the wire-to-wire win. The Las Vegas racer used Rob Flynn horsepower to clock a run of 4.590 seconds at 325.85, while Erbacher’s rail lost traction and slowed to a pass of 8.559 seconds. It was Fuller’s 90th career Top Fuel round win. In round two, Fuller was matched up against Michigan driver Hillary Will. Both drivers used outstanding starts and Fuller drove the CAT dragster to the early lead before the yellow-and-black car spun the tires and slowed to a pass of 5.305 at 200.32. Will sped to a run of 4.694 at 316.60 to earn the win light and trip to the semifinals. “We thought our 4.59 in the first round was pretty conservative,” Fuller said. “We thought it would win and it ended up being second low (elapsed time) of the round. You can’t take Urs (Erbacher) lightly because our teammate ran them in Pomona (Calif.) and they ran a good 4.50. I was nervous in the second round because the water grains improved and we would make more horsepower, and both pairs in front of us smoked the tires. Hillary (Will) had a good run that lap. It’s drag racing. That’s how it goes some times. Our CAT team is running strong and working on our consistency.” The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 21st annual O’Reilly Spring Nationals, March 28-30, at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas. Headquartered in Houston with race operations located in Brownsburg, Ind., David Powers Motorsports fields the two-car Top Fuel operation of drivers Rod Fuller and Antron Brown.
