(June 3, 2008) – When the David Powers-owned Caterpillar Top Fuel dragster competes at this weekend’s 11th annual Torco Racing Fuels Nationals at Route 66 Raceway, June 6-8, driver Hot Rod Fuller and crew will have a special cheering section in the stands. More than 3,000 Caterpillar employees, along with family and friends, will be attending the race as part of a Caterpillar-sponsored event to support the race team. “We wanted to plan something unique for our drag racing fans since Hot Rod Fuller is competing just a few hours from Caterpillar’s corporate headquarters in Peoria, Illinois,” said Jim Parker, vice president of Caterpillar’s North American Commercial Division. “We’re thrilled so many of our employees are engaged and will be supporting the team.” This is the largest company-sponsored event for Caterpillar employees at Route 66 Raceway. When not watching the 8,000-horsepower Caterpillar dragster race to speeds in excess of 300 mph, Cat Racing fans are sure to be found crowding around the DPM Iron Eagle Club hospitality tent catching a glimpse of the engine rebuild process or speaking to Fuller at the pit area. Also expect to see the Cat Racing fans make a colorful statement at the Raceway as they’ll be sporting Caterpillar’s signature color to create a “sea of yellow” in their seats. “When I heard how many people are making the trip up to support us at Joliet, all I could say is ‘wow’,” Fuller said. “The more than 3,000 Cat employees, their families and friends attending show what great support we have. I keep saying we have the best sponsor in the sport. We did pretty well at Madison (Ill.) last month, I hope we can bring home another win in Illinois in front of all the Cat people.” Caterpillar partnered with David Powers Motorsports and the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) beginning in 2008 following a successful technician recruiting pilot program involving Caterpillar, some if its dealers, DPM and the NHRA last season. A shortage of qualified service technicians prompted the pilot program. Caterpillar and its dealers find the NHRA drag racing format offers a rich recruiting environment of highly skilled candidates with mechanical backgrounds. During the pilot process, Caterpillar dealers had great success in technician recruiting. There were 7,829 contacts, 3,288 (42-perecent) of those identified themselves as technicians. Of those, 1,742 (22-percent) were skilled technicians and had requested an interview for a position. While the primary structure of the program is technician recruiting, dealers have successfully used the sponsorship to promote equipment sales, rental sales, customer entertainment, and employee engagement.
