(April 25, 2008) – One year after earning the pole at Atlanta Dragway, six-time NHRA Top Fuel winner Rod Fuller powered his David Powers-owned Caterpillar dragster to the provisional No. 2 qualifying position Friday at Atlanta Dragway. Fuller clocked a run of 4.572 seconds on Friday evening to open qualifying at the 28th annual Summit Racing Southern Nationals. The six-time NHRA Top Fuel winner opened qualifying at the Commerce track by powering to the eighth quickest run of the session. Fuller drove his Rob Flynn-tuned Caterpillar rail to a pass of 5.024 seconds at 211.23 mph. The Las Vegas racer clocked the third quickest half-track elapsed time of the session. Under the lights, the Caterpillar-backed rail used Flynn’s “Canadian Horsepower” to record the second quickest pass of the day. Fuller raced to a run of 4.572 seconds at 320.73 mph in the left lane Atlanta Dragway. The highest Fuller has qualified this season is third (4.555 seconds) at the Gainesville, Fla. event in March. “We were glad to see most of the cars run well, that showed the track was stout,” Fuller said. “We’ve had no problem making horsepower this season, the problem was applying the power to the track. We put the power in the car and it performed like it had in the past. When we got back from the run and looked at the computer we found it has more left it in. We’re happy to be second. We don’t know how Saturday will play out, but it feels good to leave the track on Friday after making a really good pass.” Professional nitro qualifying resumes Saturday afternoon at Atlanta Dragway with sessions scheduled for 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. (ET). Fuller earned the pole at the Atlanta race last spring (4.506 seconds). He has six career poles.
