CLERMONT, Ind. (Aug. 30, 2008) – Antron Brown made his best run of qualifying at the U.S. Nationals Saturday evening under the lights at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis when the first-year Top Fuel driver powered the David Powers-owned Matco Tools dragster to a lap of 3.878-seconds. Brown, who ranks second in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel standings, entered the day in the No. 16 qualifying position after the Matco Tools rail overpowered the track on Friday evening. On Saturday’s first attempt, Brown’s bright blue car spun the tires on the hot O.R.P. drag strip and slowed to a pass of 4.926 seconds at 200.05 mph. That positioned him 15th in the order. Before making his second run of the day, Brown sat 19th in the 16-car order. The two-time Top Fuel winner used a tune-up from crew chief Lee Beard to blister the historic track in 3.878 at 309.91 to finish in the provisional No. 7 qualifying position. Brown has qualified seventh at the last two events at Brainerd, Minn. and Reading, Pa. “My guys did an awesome job,” Brown said. “We were in a tough position, but I knew Lee (Beard) and the boys would come through. That was a good run. We really couldn’t stand on it because we had to get down the track. Now we can focus on our race day setup in the heat on Sunday.” Professional nitro qualifying resumes Sunday afternoon at O’Reilly Raceway Park with sessions four and five scheduled for 12:45 and 3:40 p.m. (ET). Final eliminations are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 1.
