The first-year Top Fuel racer used a pass of 4.644 seconds at 322.42 mph to qualify for the 149th consecutive event. After racing the Matco Tools/Valvoline rail to the provisional No. 12 qualifying position with a pass of 4.644 seconds on Friday afternoon, Brown’s bright blue dragster lost traction on Saturday’s first qualifying attempt and coasted to a run of 5.286 seconds at 213.06 mph. The Lee Beard-tuned rail dropped a cylinder on its final pass as Brown clocked a run of 4.769 at 281.07 to remain 12th in the 16 car order. There were 19 cars attempting to make the cut this weekend at the Houston-area track. It is the first time since making the move to Top Fuel that Brown will start in the bottom half of the field. “Man, it was just tricky out here this weekend,” Brown said. “We got that Matco dragster in the show after making a good opening run on Friday. I have confidence in Lee (Beard) and my guys and I think we’re going to go some rounds on Sunday.” Brown will face off against No. 5 qualifier Doug Foley in the first round of Top Fuel eliminations at 11 a.m. (CT) at Houston Raceway Park. He defeated the veteran racer two weeks ago in Gainesville, Fla. ESPN2 will televise 150 minutes of final eliminations coverage from the Houston race at 4:30 p.m. (ET) on Sunday.
