(March 16, 2008) – Antron Brown powered his David Powers-owned Matco Tools dragster to a quarterfinal finish Sunday afternoon at Gainesville Raceway during the 39th annual ACDelco Gatornationals. Ten seasons after making his professional debut at the Gatornationals, Brown was pitted against veteran racer Doug Foley in his first career Top Fuel round at Gainesville Raceway. Brown used a slight jump at the starting line and a Lee Beard tune-up to race the Matco Tools dragster to the win with a pass of 4.604 seconds at 327.03 mph. Foley’s white dragster was on an excellent run until it lost traction down track and slowed to a run of 4.923 at 217.57. The round win marked Brown’s third straight visit to the quarterfinals to start the year. Brown faced off against five-time series champion Tony Schumacher in the quarterfinals for the second consecutive event. The two drivers used solid reaction times, but the Matco Tools rail overpowered the track and Brown coasted to a lap of 9.495 at 68.96. Schumacher clocked the quickest pass of the round at 4.604 at 327.03 to earn the trip to the semifinals. “Man, we’ve got to get over this second round jinx,” Brown said. “Our Matco dragster is running great, we’re qualifying well, we just need to work on the consistency in the second round. I’m getting more comfortable in the car and I’m ready to start working overtime on race day.” The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 21st annual O’Reilly Spring Nationals, March 28-30, at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas. Brown has one career pole and runner-up finish at the Houston race.
