(May 16, 2008) – Antron Brown raced his David Powers-owned Matco Tools dragster to the top speed of the opening day of qualifying Friday at Bristol Dragway, 330.15 mph. The 18-time NHRA winner earned the provisional No. 4 qualifying position with a run of 4.542 seconds. Brown, a two-time winner this season, raced the Matco Tools/iLocate GPS rail to an opening run of 4.732 seconds at 272.89 mph to place his bright blue car 11th after the first qualifying session. Brown, who last competed at Bristol Dragway in 2000 during the Winston Showdown bonus race, used Lee Beard horsepower to card a pass of 4.542 at 330.15 to finish fourth in the 16-car order. He has earned top speed of the meet honors at the last two events, Atlanta and St. Louis. Brown is a three-time finalist this season with two Top Fuel wins, Houston and Atlanta. “We had a little problem on the first run, but this Matco Tools team is awesome,” Brown said. “Lee (Beard) and my Matco guys got everything hooked back up for the night run and we laid down a good number. The guys told me to hold on and this Matco dragster put up another awesome number with the 330 (mph) speed. We’re going to try and improve and run a little quicker on Saturday.” Professional nitro qualifying resumes Saturday afternoon at Bristol Dragway with sessions scheduled for 1 and 3:30 p.m. (ET). Brown earned the pole at the season-opener in Pomona, Calif. this February (4.495 seconds).
