(April 26, 2008) – Antron Brown improved his position Saturday afternoon at Atlanta Dragway as the first-year Top Fuel racer drove his Matco Tools dragster to the No. 9 qualifying position with a pass of 4.635 seconds. The 17-time NHRA winner entered the final day of qualifying for the 28th annual Summit Racing Southern Nationals ranked 11th in the 16-car order with a time of 4.753-seconds on Friday’s first qualifying attempt. On Saturday’s first pass, Brown used a tune-up from crew chief Lee Beard to power the Matco Tools/iLocate dragster to a run of 4.660 seconds at 314.83 mph. That moved him to 10th in the order. Brown’s best qualifying effort of the weekend came on his final pass when he blistered the hot Atlanta Dragway quarter mile in 4.635 at 313.29 to earn the No. 9 qualifying position. He has now qualified for 151 consecutive events, the second longest streak in the sport (Angelle Sampey). “Our weekend outlook is positive for the Matco Tools dragster,” Brown said. “We were productive in qualifying. We had a couple of bugs, but the team did a great job of getting us on course. We have a consistent and fast car and I’m looking forward to the challenge on Sunday.” Brown will battle No. 8 qualifier David Grubnic in the first round of Top Fuel eliminations which begin at 11 a.m. (ET). They have yet to meet this season and more than likely will be the first pair of dragsters to go down the track on race day.
